Going Beyond the Basic Show-Hide Layers Behavior - Part 1

Going Beyond the Basic Show-Hide Layers Behavior - Part 1

Printer-Friendly Format

Ever wonder how sites make layers appear and disappear based upon your interaction — such as mousing over images or links, or clicking buttons? Well, Dreamweaver makes it "point and click" easy with the Show-Hide Layers behavior (but hang on, we're going beyond the basics here).

With a little hand-coding, you can extend the basic functionality of the Show-Hide Layers behavior in Dreamweaver. In Part I in this series, you're going to learn how to show a layer when a user makes a selection in a select list.

Getting Started

Let's start by creating a work page that contains a few layers we can show and hide. We'll also need to add a select list to determine which layer to show.

Here we go.

  1. Create a new page using File > New.
(if you don't have a preferred document type, select HTML)
  2. Make sure you're in code view.

Now Let's Add the Form and Select List

  1. Select the Forms tab on the Insert bar (or use Window > Insert and click Form to add a form to your page). Don't worry about the select list values now. We'll add them later based upon the Layer ID's.
